Mainoumi gives Endoh three keys to success

Mar. 03 - Former Komusubi and current NHK color analyst, Mainoumi Shuhei, called Endoh aside after a recent keiko session against Kakuryu and gave the youngster three keys to winning among the jo'i and possibly obtaining a kin-boshi (win over a Yokozuna).

1. Don't panic even if you lose the tachi-ai. "When Endoh would get beat at the tachi-ai by Kakuryu, he'd be standing straight up. Choosing a better angle of attack and holding his position will enable him to retreat and counter attack effectively."

2. Choose your de-geiko opponents wisely. "  In order to gain a stronger and faster tachi-ai, he has no choice but to do keiko with an opponent who has a strong tachi-ai. Practicing with the Ozeki now in this environment will pay dividends later."

3. Don't rush things. Time will resolve everything. "He loses his stamina fast, but I was the same way. If you practice against the jo'i, in two or three years you'll start keeping up with them."

After receiving the advice, Endoh commented, "I've been thinking along those same lines, but even though the mind is willing the body is still weak."  Endoh's statement was backed up by the left side of his face which was still swollen after repeated beating at the hands of Kakuryu.
