Talking Sumo Box #42: Kaisho's Yoshinoya 'Winning Meal'

BBM Sports' ongoing "Talking Sumo Treasure Box" series looks at kachi-meshi — meals rikishi swear bring wins. For the September 2019 basho, new juryo Kaisho of Asakayama-beya (the first sekitori raised by former ozeki Kaio) explained how Yoshinoya fueled a turnaround.

After opening 0-3, and again after a sixth-day loss, he ate an extra-large gyudon plus a large karubi-don. The next day he won both times, including a yorikiri over 199-kg former sanyaku Gagamaru that evened him at 4-4. He finished 8-7 for kachi-koshi, laughing that the combo once cost exactly 1,500 yen and was still a bargain even after a price bump. Eating, the column notes, is another form of keiko for stamina-first rikishi.
