Asanoyama Ready for First Joi-Oroshi in 16 Basho: 'Go For It'
Former ozeki Asanoyama, at East Maegashira 1 for Kyushu after rebuilding from a serious left-knee injury, said on the 6th he is just glad to reach opening day healthy: "All that's left is to go for it." Light shiko and suriashi work at Takasago's Fukuoka quarters capped the day.
Day 1 is a first meeting with ozeki Aonishiki — "We've never even trained together" — and Day 2 is his first yokozuna bout in 16 tournaments, against Hoshoryu. He last took the full joi-oroshi slate in the Spring basho two years ago; after the Nagoya 2024 knee injury he restarted from sandanme in Spring 2025.
