Asanoyama on Early Draw: 'I'll Just Wrestle My Sumo'
East Maegashira 1 Asanoyama learned his Kyushu openers mid-interview when the Kyokai posted them: first-meeting ozeki Aonishiki on Day 1 and yokozuna Hoshoryu — a 0-5 series — on Day 2. He asked reporters who Day 1 was, then said he would not talk impressions of Aonishiki so he would not overthink it. When Hoshoryu landed on Day 2 he laughed out a high "ooh."
A kachi-koshi from M1e would put a first sanyaku return since Summer 2024 within reach after a 10-5 Aki that kept him in the yusho hunt late. November 6 was also the third anniversary of the death of his late stablemaster, former ozeki Asashio; Asanoyama said the only repayment is to win and raise his rank, and that a first kinboshi since then would be welcome too. Takasago-beya's Netflix documentary Dohyo-giwa began streaming the same week, and he hopes it draws more eyes to sumo and the stable.
