Kyushu Day 1: Onosato vs Yoshinofuji; Hoshoryu Opens vs Churanoumi
The Japan Sumo Association set the opening makuuchi matchups for the Kyushu basho (opens November 8 at Fukuoka Kokusai Center) at a torikumi meeting on the 6th. Yokozuna Onosato, chasing back-to-back yusho after winning Aki, draws returning komusubi Yoshinofuji on day 1 and faces Fujiryoga on day 2.
Yokozuna Hoshoryu, back after three straight absences, opens against new komusubi Churanoumi — Okinawa's first sanyaku rikishi — and meets former ozeki Asanoyama on day 2. Among the ozeki, last year's Kyushu champion Aonishiki faces Asanoyama then Yoshinofuji; Kotozakura draws Fujiryoga and Churanoumi; and Kirishima meets Ura and Fujiseiun. Sekiwake Fujinokawa is paired with Fujiseiun on day 1, and sekiwake Atamifuji faces former ozeki Takayasu. New makuuchi man Dewanoryu draws 41-year-old returnee Tamawashi.
