Wakatakakage Draws Ryuden on Juryo Return; Asahifuji Opens vs Tamashoho
The Kyushu basho torikumi meeting on the 6th also locked in the day-1 juryo card. Former sekiwake Wakatakakage (Arashio), returning at West Juryo 5 after emergency surgery for compartment syndrome before the July basho and two straight absences, opens against Ryuden (Takadagawa). It will be his first tournament since winning the May yusho; speaking to reporters on the 5th, he kept it short: "I'll do my best."
New juryo Asahifuji (Isegahama), who inherited the shikona of the 63rd yokozuna and reached the paid ranks in six tournaments — tying the fastest climb since the six-basho calendar began in 1958, excluding tsukedashi entrants — draws Tamashoho (Kataonami) on day 1. Fellow new juryo Ryuho (Otowayama) is paired with Hatsuyama (Tamanoi).
