Kumamoto's Yoshinofuji Wants a Day 1 Win Over Onosato for Quake-Hit Home
Back at komusubi, a career high, Yoshinofuji, 25, of Uto, Kumamoto, meets yokozuna Onosato in Day 1's musubi. Yomiuri reports he was home in Uto when the July 28 quake struck (shindo 6+); his family was unhurt, but the house's walls cracked, and dishes at his father's yakiniku restaurant were nearly all smashed. He helped clean up before leaving for the summer tour.
At Aki he lost his first five, then won nine of the last ten. 'Lots of people will come from Kumamoto, so I want to win from Day 1,' he said, hoping to bring bright news to the area. A strong basho could put a first sekiwake promotion in view.
