Kyushu Kensho Hit a Basho-Record 2,637; Onosato Leads With 224
The JSA reported 2,637 kensho banner applications for Kyushu — a tournament record for the Fukuoka meet (previously 2,177 last year), though short of this year's regional high of 3,504 at Nagoya. Yokozuna Onosato tops the individual list at 224, followed by returning komusubi Yoshinofuji (175), Aonishiki (128), Kirishima (121), Oshoma (111), Kotozakura (106), and Fujinokawa (100). Returning Hoshoryu sits mid-pack at 44.
Eighty-five companies signed on, seven of them new. Shueisha will hang musubi banners tied to Hiroshi Motomiya's manga complete-works project, featuring Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daisho hero Mankichi Togawa; Fukuoka native and new makuuchi Arashifuji also draws tonkotsu chain Ichiran.
