First-Ever Sumida Jungyo Set for April 14, 2027 at Higashin Arena
The Sumo TOKYO Sumida Basho organizing committee announced on the 5th that the first jungyo (regional tour stop) ever held in Tokyo's Sumida Ward — home to Ryogoku Kokugikan and 16 sumo stables — will take place April 14, 2027 at Higashin Arena (Sumida Ward Gymnasium). Organizers are billing it as the rikishi's hometown stop under the concept "sumo as everyday life," as Reiwa 9 Spring Jungyo Sumida Basho.
The compact venue seats about 3,800, with floor-level chairs and special options such as four-person sandan-maki box seats and front-row S seats. A second-floor "Sumida Basho Mall" for goods and bentos will be open even without a ticket. New local mascot Sumida Bashocchi (forever 22 and dreaming of becoming a rikishi) debuts alongside Kaorin.
