Churanoumi Becomes Okinawa's First Sanyaku Rikishi

The 33 year-old Churanoumi enters Kyushu at East Komusubi, making him the first rikishi from Okinawa ever to reach the sanyaku. The former Nihon University man needed 63 basho to get there, the slowest climb for a collegiate entrant, built on a patient left-hand mae-mitsu attack and a carefully tailored shiko routine. He says his only goal is to finish the year with a kachi-koshi. Yoshinofuji also returns to Komusubi after a two-basho absence from the rank.
